Day 32 - July 3 - Dawson City, Yukon to Chicken, Alaska - 106 miles, 8.1 mpg
"North, to Alaksa! We're goin' north, the rush is on!" Well, not so much in a rush. After a three hour wait to board the ferry to get across the Yukon River, we started climbing the hills. After about ten miles, the pavement turned to gravel and dirt, for the rest of the drive, except for a few miles at the border between Alaska and Yukon. Very bumpy and dusty ride! I would venture a guess that at least 85 miles is unpaved. It took four hours to travel the 106 miles, not including the three hour wait for the ferry! Others had to wait longer!
The views were spectacular, and we were travelling the "Top of the World Highway." At times, we were above the treeline.
Upon arrival into Chicken, we found that the InCommand module, the touch-screen panel that controls the lights, slideouts, awning, and other features, would not respond. Dead! A kind soul from another group (or maybe he was solo) came over with a multi-meter, and said "Let's do a reboot by turning off your main breaker." We did so, and nothing changed, but I was reminded that the 12 volt system was still on, so I said "Hold on a minute. Let me disconnect the battery system, and then turn it back on." So I did. Lo and behold, the panel lit up, and worked just fine. I would venture another guess that all the shaking and jostling around for 85+ miles got things a little mixed up.
Got settled in, then took a tour of Dredge #4, which was renamed the Pedro Dredge, after Pedro Felix, who discovered gold in this area. Very interesting tour of the dredge and how it operated.
