Day 30 - 31 - July 1 -2, Dawson City, Yukon - Canada Day
Did a walking tour of Dawson City with a local guide. Very nice interpretive walk. The streets in Dawson City are not paved, and the sidewalks are all boardwalks, at least in the "downtown" section. The guide took us into some preserved buildings that are only opened during these walks, and she described the history of the gold discovery in the Yukon, and the ensuing stampede of folks wanting to strike it rich.
During the tour, the local Canada Parade went by, so we were able to watch and participate. What a special treat, as short as it was. Dawson has only 1800 residents, so everyone knows each other, sort of. All the local kids were in the parade. Just like Georgetown!
After the tour, Dianne and I visited Jack London's cabin, which was not much to visit, and then a trip down the street to Robert Service's cabin. Turns out a local docent was leading a tour, and reciting his poetry, including The Cremation of Sam McGee. She did an outstanding job.
In the evening, the entire group went to Diamond Tooth Gertie's Gambling Hall, for the traditional Can-Can dance routine. We had dinner at the club, and watched the 8:30 show, during which the four dancers came out into the audience, and picked some unsuspecting souls to go on stage with them. Guess what? I was selected, not knowing what I was getting into! I did not volunteer, raise my hand, or wink. She just came to me. Totally humiliating, but it all worked out. The reward was taking Holly's garter off, and we were allowed to keep them. (Not really rewarding to me - but if it was Dianne.... that's another story!) It will go on my rear view mirror! Photos and videos to follow!
