Day 6 - 8, June 7 - 9

Rainy days, except for Sunday, June 9.   On Friday, we visited Glacier National Park, went to the visitor center, and drove 14 miles up the Going to the Sun Road.  The road was closed at Avalanche (which we knew in advance).  Crews are still clearing the "Big Drift" on the east side, and resurfacing the road on the west side.  The road will re-open on June 22.  So, we took a little walk at Avalanche, on a boardwalk path, in the drizzle...
It wasn't raining in Whitefish, so we drove the 26 miles, and had lunch at the Craggy Range Bar and Grill.  The Bison burger wasn't bad, washed down with a Two Rivers Pale Ale!  Quick stroll through downtown, then back to West Glacier and the campground.  Clancy did not like being left alone inside for six hours.   He let us know, in no uncertain terms!
Saturday was spent indoors, except for a minor excursion for groceries and smoker pellets (I have some, but we will be in the backwoods for the next two weeks, and I wanted to make sure I have enough fuel for the smoker!)  Another rainy day, but more than a drizzle, so no outdoor activities.  
Sunday, I golfed at Meadow Lake Golf Course, a beautiful course tucked away north of Columbia Falls.   Didn't play too well (as usual), but had a lot of fun.

Day 69 - August 9, Spences Bridge, BC to Sedro-Woolley, WA - 183 miles, 9.5 mpg

Beautiful drive down the Fraser River Valley, connecting with lower British Columbia, and finally the border crossing at Sumas.  We stopped briefly at Hells Gate, but it would not open for another hour, so we decided to skip this tourist attraction.  Would have been nice to see it, but we don't like waiting!   Although the signs coming into the border crossing said only a 15 minute wait, it took us an hour and ten minutes in line.  Excruciating pain!  I abhor such wasting of time, but it was all in the name of travel.  No problems passing through the customs checkpoint, just a slow border agent! Several miles further, we arrived at the Sedro-Woolley City RV Park, and settled in.  Did some shopping, but not at the right store.  Seems we wouldn't find a full supermarket until tomorrow!

Day 64 - August 4 - Dease Lake, BC to Stewart, BC - 238 miles, 10.2 mpg

More bears on the road today.  Many more than any other day.  Unfortunately, there were rigs ahead of us that stopped first, so when we got up to the bears, they had already scampered off into the brush. We passed through Jade City, an area where they mine Jade, cut it, send it to China for carving, and receive it back to sell to tourists.  Quite an operation! It was a beautiful drive, all-in-all.  More bears, and beautiful scenery, including the Bear Glacier and Bear River.   When we arrived in camp, we noticed that our dining room window was broken.  It was intact when we started the day.  My story is that when we drove between the momma bear and her cubs, the momma bear wanted to come through the window!  Of course, that did not happen.  We don't know how the window broke, but a travel angel, Rachel, donated her cutting board so that we could tape it up, to keep the weather and dust out.   Thank you, Rachel!

Day 25 - June 26 - Liard Hot Springs, BC to Watson Lake, Yukon, 128 miles, 9.3 mpg

Left Liard Hot Springs around 0930.  Late start, since it is such a short driving day.  Can't get into the next RV park until 1300, and it is only a 3 hour drive. Right away we saw two bears on the side of the road, followed by a herd of bison.  Later on, we came to a single bison lying down on the side of the highway, as if he were guarding the road. We passed Fantasy 1 on the side of the road, with others in our group already stopped to assist, so we carried on.   Turns out they had problems with their toad dolly (the dolly that they put the front wheels of their car onto, so they can tow it behind the motor home).   I will take this opportunity to explain the Fantasy numbers.   This tour is put on by Fantasy RV Tours.   Each rig is assigned a number, and the leaders installed large decals on the front and rear of our RVs and tow vehicles, so that we can be identified when they or others in the group see us on the road.   Dianne and I are ...
