Day 28 - June 29, Whitehorse, Yukon
After a hearty breakfast of Keto pancakes, we all lined up in our vehicles to carpool to Muktuk Adventures, a sled dog destination. Wow, I did not expect what I saw! It was awesome. The owners have currently 131 dogs mostly Alaskan Huskies, with a couple exceptions. They rescue many of them, and all of them are working dogs in the winter, pulling sleds for tourists who want a sled dog experience. During the summer, they run, play, eat, and play, and eat.... but they eat more in the winter when they are running and pulling sleds. They love to sleep in the snow. The owner did a fantastic job of explaining the maintenance and feeding of sled dogs, and explaining the winners and losers of the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest, from Whitehorse to Fairbanks (alternating starting locations every year). Then, his wife and crew prepared a fantastic lunch, including elk sausage with blueberries, candied smoked salmon, and bison burgers. The entire morning totally blew my mind, as I had no idea what went into the maintenance and upkeep of sled dogs, and the racing during the winter. The photos do not do it justice!
Do not think that because these dogs are on chains that they are abused! These are some of the most cared for Alaskan Husky sled dogs in the north. They are run every day, fed twice a day, and watered multiple times. They are on chains because 131 dogs will not all get along together in a single fenced area, and it is unfeasible to have each one in a single fenced area. They all totally love their owners, as evidenced in some videos I took while they owners were letting a few loose for their run. Totally awesome!
